VMware Virtual SAN article

So I was asked to write another article for SearchVMware, and decided to write about Virtual SAN as it's an interesting concept which VMware have decided is one of 2 key focused products for 2016 (the other being NSX). Enjoy...... http://searchvmware.techtarget.com/tip/VSAN-61-boasts-new-features-promises-greater-end-user-security

Upgrading vCenter Server from 5.5 to 6.0u1

Now that VMworld Europe is over I've had more time to sit down and look at MTI's Solution Centre and decided that I’d take the opportunity to upgrade my company’s primary demo environment to vSphere 6.0. Previously I had held off doing an upgrade because we run a PernixData demo environment on our main ESXi … Continue reading Upgrading vCenter Server from 5.5 to 6.0u1

Upgrading vCenter Server Appliance to 6.0 update 1

So now that VMware have released their latest updates, I thought it would be a good time to upgrade my demo environment. Whilst I’ve carried out numerous upgrades/patches on previous releases of the vCSA, I’ve not yet carried one out for the vCSA 6.0. BTW, I’ve previously documented my vCSA upgrades, so pop along to these … Continue reading Upgrading vCenter Server Appliance to 6.0 update 1

VMware Labs re-write the Onyx tool for vSphere 6.0 Web Client

I've been a fan of Onyx since it was launched back in 2009/10 and was an avid user of it when I had to quickly learn how to write some automation scripts for a previous project. For those of you who haven't heard of this tool before, Project Onyx is a script recorder that sits between vSphere … Continue reading VMware Labs re-write the Onyx tool for vSphere 6.0 Web Client

VMware vSphere ESXi and vCenter Server 6.0.0b Released

So the first minor release for vSphere ESXi 6.0 is out alongside the second minor release for vCenter Server 6.0. https://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere6/doc/vsphere-vcenter-server-600b-release-notes.html https://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere6/doc/vsphere-esxi-600b-release-notes.html Looking through the release notes, I don't think I've experienced any of those bugs that have been fixed - which is a good indication of a stable software release..... I'm guessing that the … Continue reading VMware vSphere ESXi and vCenter Server 6.0.0b Released

Comparing the Configuration of vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 and 6.0

Great White Paper here for those of you transitioning from 5.5 to 6.0 and want to know what the differences are: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/products/vsphere/VMware-vsphere-60-vcenter-server-appliance-55-60-comparison.pdf For me the major difference is VMware have dropped the Virtual Appliance Management Interface (VAMI), which makes sense as why would you want to manage your virtual environment from one browser url and … Continue reading Comparing the Configuration of vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 and 6.0

No coredump target has been configured

So recently a number of customers have been experiencing a core dump target error after rebooting their ESXi hosts.... quite strangely I also recently experienced the same issue when my demo environment went down a few weeks ago due to a power failure. There isn't really a clear explanation why this happens, but it seems … Continue reading No coredump target has been configured

Issues using Windows Session Credentials with vSphere Client and vCenter Server Appliance

So it seems there's a known bug when using vSphere Client to log into your vCenter Server Appliance..... it actually affects vCenter Server Appliance 5.1, 5.5, and 6.0. If you try to log in to vCenter Server by checking the "Use Windows Session Credentials", it bombs out with a General System Error as follows: Looking into the vpxd.log … Continue reading Issues using Windows Session Credentials with vSphere Client and vCenter Server Appliance

Installing/Upgrading vCenter Server Appliance 6.0

I've been itching to deploy vSphere 6.0 GA for weeks now (since it was launched last month - wanted to replace my vSphere 6.0 Beta environment) but due to work commitments I've had to put this pet-project on the back-burner..... really hate when vendors release new toys at the end of quarter as it means … Continue reading Installing/Upgrading vCenter Server Appliance 6.0
